Glitched-out noisescapes that intentionally or unintentionally, one way or another, tend toward power/heavy electronics tropes. Not for carbon-based eardrums.

Mix: Blunt Scissors

The dizzying technicality of fast-paced cut-up noise is often best rendered with a production approach that reflects the sharp, sterile abrasiveness of the music—often, not always. These are the other cases: the crudely clinical, the sloppily stitched, the rusty-blade incisions. Ouch.

Mix: What the Summer Rain Knows

We’ve had plenty of both rain and heat here in Ohio the past few months, and I’d wager most other places are seeing similar changes; both erratic extreme weather and rising temperatures are only going to get worse. But these mixes sometimes have to be about silver linings, and everyone can appreciate the oddly tense, electric tranquility of being sheltered away during a soaking summer storm. It often seems to speak with its boisterous growls of thunder and musical pitter-patter, but ambiguous messages are hard to decipher when you’re just trying to make sure your basement doesn’t flood or your windows don’t cave in.

36:08. Faust – “Meadow Meal” [ending] from Faust (Polydor, 1971)

Mix: Psychedelic Slabs

I’ve made plenty of mixes showcasing the best in abrasive, in-your-face harsh noise, but there’s a whole other subsect of the genre that mines a somewhat less immediate, but no less affecting, viscerality from the tried-and-true formula of maxed-out electronics, evoking haze, lethargy, and claustrophobia via sleazy, droning, psychedelic transmissions. You can read my recent review of the new Manure Movers of of America tape for my take on this approach, but in truth this is great music for a variety of situations—a late night smoke session, perhaps, or even a lazy afternoon nap for the adventurous.
